Berseem clover, sometimes known as Egyptian clover, is an annual forage legume that is commonly used as a fodder crop that is mainly for cattle and milk buffalo.
This fast-growing clover cut seed is one of the most detrimental leguminous forages in the Mediterranean region and Middle Eastern countries. Due to the warm soils and growing conditions, the seeds grow into a fast-growing biomass and nitrogen fixation.
There are a number of benefits that come with growing berseem clover seed. The fast-growing plant is not only an excellent cover crop and forage but is also useful as a weed suppressor. As an annual clover that is extremely fast to establish, the crop produces prolific seed which is often used as a companion crop with oats.
The Egyptian clover cannot withstand most winter or frosty temperatures and therefore is often used as a winter-killed crop prior to planting corn and green manure. As well as its range of practical benefits, Berseem clover plants are very attractive plants and provide a beautiful site when in bloom, perfect for annual ground cover.
Over the years, the plant has seen some revolutionary work done with it by using it as a companion crop with oil seed rape to enhance rooting. It is worth noting that the plant has a rather low frost tolerance and will not grow back once cut.
While this fast-growing clover cut seed is often used by farmers as a cost-effective crop solution, this beautiful flowering plant can also make a wonderful addition to a back garden.
